Before entering the Montessori field in 1969, Sister Anthonita had 18 years of experience teaching traditional education at the elementary level. She founded the St Joseph Academy, Montessori Children’s House in Adrian, Michigan with Sister Leonor J. Esnard in 1971. Sister Anthonita was the administrator of the Academy until 1993.

Sister Anthonita founded the teacher education program here in Adrian in 1991 and was the Executive Director until her death in 2009.
In addition to her teaching and her ministry of education, Sister Anthonita worked tirelessly as an advocate for children, the poor and the disadvantaged.
Sister Anthonita granted scholarships to At Risk children so they could have the opportunity to attend St Joseph Academy Montessori Children’s House. Sister Anthonita also granted adult scholarships to qualified applicants attending the Adrian Dominican Montessori Teacher Education Institute (ADMTEI).

ADMTEI continues Sister Anthonita’s mission.
A portion of all student tuition is used to support and perpetuate the Sister Anthonita Porta Legacy Trust. The Trust grants scholarships to At Risk children and to adults wishing to become Montessori professionals.
